Known for their accuracy and attention to detail, Aoshima's precision Waterline Series focuses on naval ship models, depicting the ship's structure from the waterline and above. Models in this series are designed to be seen as if floating on the water, highlighting the above-water structure, whilst also making for a more practical and space-efficient display on a flat surface.
HMS Cornwall was a County class heavy cruiser, one of seven of the Kent sub-class built for the Royal Navy, and Royal Australian Navy. Designed within the limits of the Washington Treaty, these 'treaty cruisers' (the term 'heavy cruiser' wasn't technically defined until the London Naval Treaty of 1930) had a distinctive three-funnel design, and ended up serving in all the major theatres of WW2.
Cornwall spent most of her time pre-war assigned to the China Station. With the outbreak of WW2, she was sent to the Inadian Ocean, to search for German commerce raiders. A stint in the South Atlantic, escorting convoys, was followed by a return to the Indian Ocean, where she sunk the German auxiliary cruiser Pinguin in May of 1941. Transferred to the Eastern Fleet in March 1942, HMS Cornwall was sunk in April of the same year, during the Indian Ocean Raid - by dive-bombers from three Japanese carriers.
Aoshima's precision Waterline Series model kit presents HMS Cornwall as she would have appeared later in her career, following her major 1936-37 refit.
