Known for their accuracy and attention to detail, Aoshima's precision Waterline Series focuses on naval ship models, depicting the ship's structure from the waterline and above. Models in this series are designed to be seen as if floating on the water, highlighting the above-water structure, whilst also making for a more practical and space-efficient display on a flat surface.
Tirpitz was the second of two Bismarck-class battleships built for the German Navy, and comissioned in 1941; having been repeatedly modified during the war, she ended up 2,000 tonnes heavier than her sister, making her the heaviest battleship built for any European power.
Unlike her sister, Tirpitz didn't see much action, only firing her main guns in anger once - during the bombardment (with the battleship Scharnhorst) of Allied positions on Spitzbergen in September 1943. Despite this, Tirpitz had a significant strategic influence: she was a 'fleet in being'; as long as she existed in port, she represented a serious threat, and kept a substantial quantity of Royal Navy ships and resources tied up countering that threat.
Although damaged in September 1943 by a daring attack by Royal Navy X-class midget submarines, Tirpitz eluded destruction until the following year; in November 1944, British Lancaster bombers, armed with the fearsome 12,000 lb Tallboy Bomb, destroyed Tirpitz.
