Known for their accuracy and attention to detail, Aoshima's precision Waterline Series focuses on naval ship models, depicting the ship's structure from the waterline and above. Models in this series are designed to be seen as if floating on the water, highlighting the above-water structure, whilst also making for a more practical and space-efficient display on a flat surface.

Naka (named after a river in eastern Japan) was the third of three Sendai-class light cruisers built for the Imperial Japanese Navy (IJN) in the twenties; she - and the rest of the class - was designed to serve as the flagship of a destroyer flotilla.

Naka was assigned a range of missions through the Pacific War, including supporting the invasion of the Philippines, and being in the thick of the Battle of the Java Sea. In March 1942, Naka was made the flagship for the Christmas Island invasion force; while the landings proceded without oposition, Naka was hit by a torpedo from USS Seawolf and badly damaged.

Naka's career came to an end in February 1944: three waves of American carrier aircraft attacked her near Truk; while the first two missed, the third wave landed a torpedo and a bomb, breaking Naka in two and sinking her.

Aoshima's precision Waterline Series model kit represents Naka as she would have appeared in 1943.
