Encounters with new heavier German armour after D-Day (eventually) persuaded the Americans that a powerful heavy tank was needed to counter such threats; the emergence of new Soviet heavies (such as the IS series) further increased the impetus. Development started in spring of 1944, and produced a number of closely related heavy tank designs, with the eventual end point being the M103.
The T30 and T34 were related designs (familiar to online tank gamers) that were developed alongside and from the T29, with all designs having many similarities. The T30 featured an enormous 155 mm main gun, developed from an artillery weapon; the subsequent T34 was equipped with a 120 mm cannon, which was a longer, higher velocity design - with far better armour penetrating capabilities.
Takom's 1/35 scale model kit allows you to recreate either the T30, or the T34, and also includes two styles of gun mantlet - with and without the canvas dust cover.
