The Kugelblitz (German for 'ball lightning') was an anti-aircraft system developed by Germany, in response to the increasing threat of Allied air attacks on their ground forces. The design followed on from things like the Ostwind and Wirbelwind, and aimed to remedy their shortcomings; the new Kugelblitz incorporated a fully enclosed rotating turret, and twin rapid-firing MK 103 30 mm cannon.
The original Kugelblitz was mounted on a Pz IV chassis, although only five prototypes were built. The Pz IV chassis was being discontinued, so alternatives were sought; Takom's model kit represents what the system might have looked like if mounted on a Pz V Panther chassis - a 'what-if' but not an outrageous one!
