The M114 Command and Reconnaissance Carrier was intended to be a smaller, faster, and more stealthy alternative to the ubiquitous (but larger) M113 APC. Built during the Vietnam War era, the M114 wasn't terribly succesful in that theatre and was withdrawn from US service in 1979.
After their withdrawl from service, some M114s were released as surplus, and are now used by police departments (examples feature in both Dragnet and the second Naked Gun film)!
