USS Artisan (ABSD-1) was a Large Auxiliary Floating Dry Dock, constructed in sections during 1942, and 1943. USS Artisan was designed to be self-sustaining, with all the facilities on board that her complement of 690 would need.
The purpose of such facilities was to enable the repair of damaged ships far nearer to the combat zone than was possible had the ships needed to return to home base, saving months in the process. When fully completed, USS Artisan could handle anything in the US fleet, up to and including fleet carriers and battleships.
