A Closer Look at the Das Werk 1/16 Leopard 2A7V: Big Kit, Bold Detail

Posted by Andy's Hobby Headquarters Canada on 2025 May 14th

We’ve got something massive and exciting to talk about today—the 1/16 scale Leopard 2A7V from Das Werk has arrived! After being teased earlier this year at the Nuremberg Toy Fair, the full production kit is now complete and heading to the U.S. in just a few weeks.

Not Just Big—It's Packed With Detail

This isn’t just a scaled-up tank—Das Werk’s 1/16 Leopard 2A7V is a serious build. From the moment you lift the box, the sheer size and weight let you know you’re dealing with something special. The upper hull alone stretches close to two feet long and features intricate slide-molded detail, including realistic weld seams and anti-skid textures.

Unlike many large-scale kits, this isn’t a bathtub-style lower hull. Instead, it’s made from multiple parts to maximize detail—perfect for modelers who enjoy the construction process as much as the finished result.

Real Suspension, Workable Tracks

Yes, you read that right. The kit includes working torsion bar suspension and workable track links. If you're into realism or diorama setups, this feature gives you the flexibility to pose your tank in dynamic terrain. Or, if you prefer static builds, the suspension arms can be fixed in place.

Each track link is built up using individual upper and lower pads and plastic rods to make them movable—similar to the prototype Andy built earlier this year. It’s not a difficult task, just a matter of time and organization.

Premium Details Throughout

This full production version includes clear parts, photo-etched brass and steel frets, and a beautifully sculpted crew figure with two headgear options (helmet and beret). The sculpt, done by Jason Studios, even includes textured soles on the boots—a nice touch that shows the level of care put into this kit.

The photo-etch adds realistic touches to the engine deck, stowage bins, and turret details, while a thick copper tow cable adds extra authenticity right out of the box.

International Marking Options

The decal sheet is robust, offering marking options not just for Germany, but also Canada, Greece, Hungary, and Denmark. Whether you're building a NATO scene, a peacekeeping diorama, or something custom, you'll have flexibility.

One standout feature is the robot-applied camouflage guide for German Leopards. Das Werk has even included a top-down view of the camo pattern without the turret, making it easier to replicate the official scheme accurately.
