New From MiniArt: The 1/35 Scale RSO Early Production Kit

Posted by Andy's Hobby Headquarters Canada on 2025 May 10th

We’re excited to showcase an all-new release from MiniArt that’s just arrived in our shop—the 1/35 scale RSO (Raupenschlepper Ost) Early Production kit. This highly detailed model brings to life one of World War II’s most versatile and compact tracked vehicles, and it's the first of several RSO variants MiniArt has in the pipeline.

Whether you’re building a winter Eastern Front diorama or simply love assembling unique support vehicles, this kit is worth a close look.

A Quick Background on the RSO

The RSO was a lightweight, fully tracked truck used extensively by the German Army during WWII, particularly on the Eastern Front where muddy, impassable terrain required better off-road capability than wheeled vehicles could offer. Over time, various versions were developed—including those with metal cabs, wooden cabs, and even open-top configurations designed to mount or tow anti-tank guns like the PaK 40.

The subject of this kit is the early production version with the metal cab, making it perfect for early- to mid-war Eastern Front scenes.

What's in the Box?

When you first crack open the box, you’ll find a surprisingly compact build. This reflects the real-life dimensions of the RSO—it’s not much larger than a Jeep in 1/35 scale. That small size, however, doesn’t mean a lack of detail.

MiniArt has packed this kit with high-quality sprues that include:

  • A full interior build, including engine and transmission components.

  • A highly detailed canvas cover with molded folds and pleats.

  • Multiple wheel sprues and link-and-length tracks, which balance realism with ease of assembly.

  • Optional canvas supports for displaying the truck with or without the cover.

  • Clear parts for the cab windows and lights, plus photo-etch details for added realism.

  • A decals sheet offering markings for two different vehicle configurations.

One standout detail: the clear parts are crystal sharp, and even small accessories—like a horseshoe possibly meant as a good luck charm—show MiniArt’s attention to character and accuracy.

Build Notes & Observations

The lower chassis is about 5 inches long, making this kit small but substantial. The inclusion of both engine and interior parts means you can pose the RSO with access panels open or integrate it into more complex diorama scenes.

The link-and-length tracks offer a smart compromise between full individual links and rubber band tracks. You’ll use individual links for curved areas around the sprockets and longer segments for the flat runs—saving time without sacrificing authenticity.

Also of note is the inclusion of both wooden and metal side panels, which hints at more variant options coming soon.

Instructions & Paint Guide

MiniArt’s instructions are well laid out and include full-color marking and painting guides. One color scheme shows the vehicle in dark yellow, Autumn 1943, which is perfect for builders aiming to recreate that time period.

Assembly is broken down clearly, making this a good kit for intermediate builders or advanced hobbyists looking for an easier build with high visual payoff.

Future Variants & Collectibility

MiniArt has announced several additional RSO variants—including versions with wooden cabs, open tops, and mounted PaK 40 guns. This early production kit is just the start of what looks to be an exciting series.

For collectors and builders alike, this means the opportunity to build out a full range of support vehicles and experiment with different loadouts, eras, and weathering styles.
