The Pz.Kpfw II Ausf. L 'Luchs' was a German light reconnaissance tank developed during World War II. The Luchs, meaning 'Lynx', was based on a modified Panzer II chassis and produced by MAN from September 1943 to January 1944. A total of 100 units were built, with an additional four converted from prototypes. Designed for high-speed reconnaissance missions, the Luchs was equipped with a 20mm KwK 38 L/55 cannon and a coaxial 7.92mm MG34 machine gun. The tank's design featured a six-speed transmission and a powerful 180 hp Maybach HL 66P engine, allowing it to reach speeds of up to 60 km/h on roads.
The Luchs served primarily with the German Panzer divisions' reconnaissance detachments, providing valuable intelligence and engaging in light skirmishes. Its armor, ranging from 10-30 mm thick, offered sufficient protection against small arms fire and shrapnel, but it was not designed for direct confrontations with enemy tanks. The Luchs' operational history includes participation in key battles such as the Battle of Kursk and subsequent operations in France. Despite its limited production, the Luchs was praised for its agility, speed, and suitability for reconnaissance tasks, making it a notable vehicle in the German armored forces during the latter part of the war.
Border Model's 1/35 scale model kit includes workable suspension, 3 colour schemes, and PE parts for maximum accuracy. The model represents a late production Luchs.
