The Patrol Air Cushion Vehicle (PACV) was a hovercraft used by the U.S. Navy and Army during the Vietnam War from 1966 to 1970. Developed from the Bell Aerosystems SK-5, the PACV was designed to patrol marshy and riverine environments like the Mekong Delta, where traditional boats could not operate effectively. The hovercraft's ability to traverse both land and water made it ideal for reconnaissance, patrol, and rapid response missions. It was heavily armed with .50 caliber heavy machine guns and M60 machine guns, providing substantial firepower in combat situations.
Despite its innovative design and versatility, the PACV faced significant challenges. Its complex mechanical systems were difficult to maintain in the harsh conditions of Vietnam, leading to frequent breakdowns. Additionally, its high operational costs and vulnerability to small arms fire limited its effectiveness. Although the PACV showed promise in certain operations, its drawbacks ultimately led to its withdrawal from Vietnam and reassignment to the U.S. Coast Guard by 1970.
Including PE parts, and decals, Gecko's 1/35 scale model kit allows you to accurately recreate a late production version of the PACV, as used by the US Navy.
