The CH-54A Tarhe was an American heavy-lift cargo helicopter developed by Sikorsky in the early 1960s. Named after an 18th-century chief of the Wyandot tribe (whose nickname was 'The Crane'), the Tarhe was designed primarily to transport large military cargo and equipment. The CH-54A featured a unique open-frame design with a large, powerful twin-engine configuration that allowed it to carry heavy payloads externally, using its cargo hook system. The helicopter was known for its versatility and capability to transport large items such as vehicles, artillery, and even portable infrastructure like bridges.
Widely used during the Vietnam War, the CH-54A played a crucial role in moving supplies, equipment, and recovering downed aircraft. Its design enabled quick loading and unloading, making it an essential part of military logistics and battlefield support. The Tarhe could carry up to 12 tons of cargo, demonstrating remarkable lifting capability for its time. It remained in service until the 1990s before being replaced by more modern heavy-lift helicopters, but it still sees civilian use today in firefighting, construction, and disaster relief operations.
