The Martin B-26B Marauder was a twin-engine medium bomber developed by the Glenn L. Martin Company during World War II. Known for its speed and precision, the B-26 was initially designed to meet the U.S. Army Air Corps' need for a fast, high-performance bomber. It made its combat debut in the Pacific Theatre in early 1942 and later played a significant role in the European Theatre. The B-26B variant was equipped with more powerful Pratt & Whitney R-2800 engines and increased armament, producing one of the hardest-working Allied bombers during the war.
Despite its effectiveness in combat, the B-26B earned a notorious reputation due to its high wing loading, which required higher landing speeds and led to a higher accident rate during training, earning it the nickname 'Widow Maker'. However, with improved training and modifications, the B-26B proved its worth in numerous bombing missions, particularly in Europe, where it contributed to the Allied strategic bombing campaign against Nazi Germany.
