The Mistel 1 was an innovative German composite aircraft developed during World War II, featuring a unique 'piggyback' design. This system involved coupling a fighter, typically a Bf 109, to the top of a modified, unmanned Junkers Ju 88 bomber loaded with explosives. The concept was for the fighter pilot to guide the bomber towards a target, detach at the critical moment, and let the explosive-laden Ju 88 crash into the target. The Mistel 1 carried a powerful shaped charge warhead designed to penetrate heavy fortifications such as reinforced concrete.
First flown in 1943, the Mistel 1 saw limited use, primarily targeting Allied ships and Soviet bridgeheads late in the war. While the weapon had some initial success, logistical challenges and advancing Allied forces limited its operational impact. Despite its novel design, the Mistel program was ultimately too late to have a significant influence on the course of the conflict.
