The Thunderbolt P-47D Bubbletop was a variant of the American P-47 Thunderbolt fighter aircraft, distinguished by its teardrop-shaped canopy - the 'bubbletop' - which provided pilots with an improved 360-degree view, compared to earlier models. Equipped with a powerful Pratt & Whitney R-2800 Double Wasp engine, the P-47D excelled in both air-to-air combat, and ground-attack roles. Armed with eight .50-calibre machine guns, and capable of carrying bombs and rockets, it became a versatile fighter-bomber that could both take on enemy aircraft, and provide effective close air support.
Renowned for its durability, the P-47D could withstand significant damage, and still return to base, earning it respect amongst Allied pilots. It was extensively used in the European Theatre, where its high speed, robust armament, and diving capabilities made it a formidable opponent. The P-47D remains one of the more iconic American fighters of World War II.
