Immortalised in the classic movie 'Das Boot' (which you've probably seen, but if you haven't, do so. Immediately!) U-96 was a Type VIIC U-Boat of the Kriegsmarine during the Second World War.
Launched in August 1940, U-96 served through the war, making eleven war patrols (generally in the Atlantic) and sinking 27 ships totalling 181,206 gross register tons; remarkably, she also suffered no casualties amongst her crew.
Her final patrol ended in February 1943, after which U-96 spent the rest of the war as a training vessel; she was decomisioned in February 1945, getting sunk in Wilhelmshaven the next month during a bombing raid by the US Eighth Air Force.
