A Premonition of a Legendary Car The sixth-generation Mark II, known as the X80 series, debuted in August 1988 as a full model change from the previous X70 series. While retaining the core design concept of its predecessor, the exterior evolved into a more stylish form with smooth, curved lines in line with contemporary trends. From this generation onward, all six-cylinder models were equipped with DOHC 24-valve engines. The front suspension adopted struts, while the rear introduced a new double wishbone system. Riding the wave of Japan’s bubble economy, the Mark II became a massive hit—so much so that in 1990 its annual sales surpassed those of the Corolla, taking the top spot for the first time in history.
