Erwin Rommel, known as the 'Desert Fox', was a highly respected German field marshal during World War II. Rommel's relationship with the Nazi regime was complex, however; he was not a member of the Nazi Party and had reservations about Adolf Hitler's leadership. In 1944, Rommel was implicated in a plot to assassinate Hitler, although his involvement remains debated. Facing execution, Rommel was forced to take his own life, and his death was portrayed by the regime as a hero’s sacrifice. Today, Rommel is remembered as one of the most skilled military tacticians of the 20th century, particularly for his innovative use of armored warfare and his legacy as a chivalrous commander.
